moorevisuali noticed 2 very small spots on the back of the top, right above where the top meets the trunk. they don't even look like holes YET, but like they may develope into holes later. someone suggested a "fray-stop" liquid that is used by tailors to stop the cut edge of material from fraying. anyone ever try this or have another suggestion?

Yes, FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM!

catfishsounds like somebody shut the lid w,top up.the release mechanism or one of top lock mechanisms on lid may have caused it.

------------------

Black Tie 161I saw rub marks trying to wear thru my top....they were below the rear window on either side. I felt underneath the canvas and felt a sharp crease in the top's mechanism. I put some soft velcro over the sharp edges.

Fix the source first then tackle saving the canvas..

GUBI had to replace my top the first month I had the 2002. I notice a couple of pin holes in the middle of the top. It seems that when you put the top down and than close the trunk lid, it rubs on the top right at the latch. All I do now is make sure I push the top down under the latch before closing the trunk. Hope it helps.
Ed W.I noticed the same condition shortly after we bought our '97.
I figured (the culprit)is the striker of the decklid when it is in the latch. You'll notice that much of the striker will stick out of the back of the latch mechanism even when it is closed. To cure this I carry a small terry cloth towel
in the truck. Before closing the deck lid, I tuck the terry cloth behind the latch and then OVER the folded top.
The striker will then rub on the terry cloth & not the top.
We also strap the top (down) when it is in the trunk to reduce movement. I've been doing this about a year & the top has shown no additional chafing.

ALLEY CATmoorevisual - our orange has a similar snag like you describe on your cat,,,along the bottom edge on one side. If you get the name of the product you are describing,,,please post it here.

If any of you are getting a "L" shape tear forming on the top sides near the rear window,,,,,read this old post and fix:
http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000116.html

CJI also use a towel to cover the top and tuck it down around so it doesn't catch on anything....haven't had any problems.
jmarquettI had the same problem on my 2000. It was obviously being caused by the convertible top release mechanism on the underside of the trunk lid. I used a towel to cover it for about 6 months or so until I took it to the dealership and asked them about it. The dealership told me that a lot of Prowlers latch release mechanism was improperly installed at the factory and was a "factory defect".
They replaced my top and adjusted the placement of the mechanism and I no longer have any problems at all!!!
I no longer have laid a towel over the top for the past 12 months with no problems at all!!
Even if your warranty is expired, I bet you can talk them into covering the cost of replacing your top and adjusting that latch a little further back.
I look forward to hearing how it works out for you.
ThunderPost some photos.
Have a 2002 have not noticed anything.
RADCAT RICHits not that the trunk latch is defective, rather that when you lay your top down in the trunk and go to close the trunk lid,"the air pressure pushes the rag top forward to the latch, causing the abrasion"
> a towell as suggested is one alternative, but i use a dense piece of foam(acadamy sells camp mats in blue)and slip it inbetween the latch and under the lip of the folded top!!!
>i would post pic, but my hardtop is on now
>i have shown my easiest fix to alot of owners, and solved problem immediately...(i have replaced my top before on my '02 /warranty!) and located the problem asap.

idiveThis is what Rich is talking about:
But Rich, I believe what they are saying is that the top release handle mechanism is rubbing on/pinching the top in the trunk in much the same mannor, thus, laying a towel over the top at the top release handle mechanism location to prevent that.

RADCAT RICHthanks mickey, was good to get together yesterday with everyone!
idiveYes, it was good to see everyone again. I was getting the fever to get out alot lately. I forgot I have Jim's chairs still. I hope I don't wake the dogs up taking them back in the middle of the night tonight!
L. E. CAT 2Here is what AC and I use in both of our cats to keep the top from getting pinched by the trunk lid mechanism. It's one of those tire dressing sponges,,,,works for us.

ed monahanThe sponge would be okay on a yellow cat. The grey matches the interior but the yellow clashes with the silver and orange cats. lol.
ed monahanBy the way, I feel a lot better now, after overhearing A/C, saying, "I hope Lethia remembered her sponge on this trip" in Texas.
ed monahanIf you are out of warranty, and you put a hole in your top, it might be cheaper to buy a hardtop than replace the soft top.
TGF, I want a kick back for this unsolicited testimonial. lol

You are right Ed, I'm going to turn them upside down so the yellow doesn't show,,,maybe paint them red Those are dual purpose sponges Ed,,,,Lethia sponges me off and then puts in back in the cat,,,,not the sponge use you were talking about, lol.

ThunderThanks for the photos.

No sign of wear on my top yet, but a little preventative medicine never hurts.
